Jose's family
Jose (40), Paulina (40), Josefa (24), Eitlel (7) and Catherine (4)
Jose's family have lived in Guatemala City for 24 years. He collects plastic in the city's 33-acre garbage dump, making around Q40 (£3) a day. They used to live in a house, but couldn't afford the rent, so they joined the 'land invasion' on the outskirts of the dump three years ago. Jose's eldest daughter Josefa, her husband and child Catherine have built a 2-storey home of corrugated iron, while her parents live with Eitlel further down the hill. They anticipate being forced to leave in a year or so, but in the meantime they have electricity and water for Q85 (£7) a month.
Jose is struggling to send his youngest daughter Eitlel to school without any charity assistance. Primary education is free in Guatemala, but children are required to wear uniforms and shoes, and provide their own exercise books. Eitlel's uniform costs Q100 (£9) a year, and books are Q60 (£5) every month.
Josefa sells tortillas at 10c (less than a penny) each. On a good day she sells more than 200, and if her husband makes good sales of the collected rubbish, they can make Q70 (£5) a day.
